Our school celebrated the birthday of our school horse Jaśmin. On Friday September 11th I took part in the action concerning animal’s birthday as a volunteer.
I joined it for a service activity. My task was to help take care of Jaśmin. We had to clean him and feed him with his “cake” that school prepared for him. Me and few of my friends were chosen for this job, since we had contact with horses before. I’ve been on a horse riding camp in past and I knew how to treat the animal and how to be careful so nobody gets hurt. We showed the kids how to properly brush/clean the horse and how to dress them up in riding equipment. Next step of our fun was actually riding a horse. My job was to teach kids how to handle the animal properly, and then I held the horse while the kids were riding it.
Before the day of celebration, I made sure I remember everything that is very important to know while surrounding yourself with horse. I remembered the rules that I have been toughed, not to walk behind the animal and to have my hand flat while feeding it, to avoid my fingers being eaten. I also reminded myself the rules about riding, where to keep the feet, and how to “start” a horse.
On the morning of Friday September 11th we were picked up by NATO bus from school. It took about an hour to get to Brzózki, were the stable was located and event took place. Shortly after we got there, me and other friends which volunteered got the permission to start preparing the horses.
The activity met my expectations. It took me a very short time to remember what great animals horses were. I started missing the camp I was on, and wanted to ride them again. I was happy I could make them clean and be around them for so long. It was really fun to walk the horses with kids on their back. I think I cooperated with other volunteers pretty well. The biggest difficulty was to divide the tasks. Most of us wanted to walk the horses and weren’t really willing to clean the wastes after the animal, but we went on a compromise and solved the situation.
This service had helped me develop a sense of responsibility, as I was responsible for a group of kids.
